Health Care System Will Become More Sustainable
Sustainable healthcare is an approach to healthcare that prioritizes environmental sustainability alongside health outcomes. It entails implementing green practices across the medical industry to minimize negative impacts on the environment and promote efficient resource consumption. Sustainable healthcare acknowledges that healthcare operations and practices contribute significantly to environmental degradation and climate change, and seeks to mitigate these impacts through environmentally-friendly practices.
Health is crucial for sustainable human development, both as an inalienable human right and an essential contributor to the economic growth of society. Sustainable healthcare is about understanding that our health – and that of our environment around us – is intrinsically linked, and acting in a way that supports both people and planet health. Health is also a good summative measure of the progress of nations in achieving sustainable development.
Health is well placed in the SDGs. The health goal (SDG 3) is broad:
- Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. The SDG declaration emphasizes that to achieve the overall health goal,
- We must achieve universal health coverage (UHC) and access to quality health care. No one must be left behind.
- SDG 3 aims to prevent needless suffering from preventable diseases and premature death by focusing on key targets that boost the health of a country's overall population.
Sustainable healthcare is underpinned by three core principles that are Sustainable prevention, Sustainable pathways and Sustainable practice.
Healthcare structures serve to protect and improve public health; however, they can have negative effects on human well-being and the environment. Thus, sustainability is an important target in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. We analyzed the state of the art in research on healthcare and sustainability by exploring literature on different healthcare systems and their relations with the environment.
The 2030 Agenda provides for strong political commitment to public health. It states that “to promote physical and mental health and wellbeing, and to extend life expectancy for all, we must achieve universal health coverage and access to quality health care. Indian healthcare industry to hit USD 37 billion by 2030 … India’s healthcare sector has shown substantial growth and is increasingly gaining prominence on the global stage. However, to ensure the sector is able to deliver world-class services, a steady flow of top-notch professionals is required to manage operations.
